Soundscape Artist Statement

My initial intention for the soundscape was to create a piece that feels grand and triumphant, which I initially tried to convey by creating a growing sweeping intro that slowly eases into a louder and louder rumble until it cuts. Though I was successful for that part of the assignment, I found fairly quickly that a lot of the sounds in the folder did not necessarily lend itself to that vision so I had to adjust my vision. My soundscape quickly grew more domestic, taking sounds from everyday life that you would hear around a household and playing with their relationships with each other. I began to combine this outline that I brainstormed with and inserted it into the scope of these sounds that I was working with so it still felt grand, but not in a big triumphant mythical way, but instead in a more everyday kind of way. My middle segment introduced all of the sounds that I felt helped this feeling of hominess, working with stove ticks and sizzling food, dryer sounds, and game board pieces, and allowing those sounds to interact with each other to paint an image of the home altogether. Finally, I incorporated all of those sounds back into the climax of the piece, letting them build on top of each other to create a cacophony of emotions until they cut, allowing the drawing sound to be heard alone. This gave the piece a solid ending, allowing the viewer to relax from this single sound after being bombarded just before.
